A TURTLENECK FOR WINTER

Steve Jobs - © Norman Seef. (1984)

Appeared at the end of the 19th century, the turtleneck was first created for athletes; essentially golfers and hockey players. It quickly becomes a unisex piece, and will be adopted by feminists in the 1960s. Then, the turtleneck is worn by public figures, such as actors Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson or Steve McQueen. Later, during the Apple Keynotes, and especially during the presentation of the first iPhone in 2007, Steve Jobs presented himself dressed in a black turtleneck, symbol of simplicity. The turtleneck, having for first goal to protect from the cold, the plastron, appeared in the 1960s, it's a piece of fabric placed under a garment, it reappeared in the Dior Homme collection in 2008. Then, at the start of the 2010s, the turtleneck was more and more exposed during the Men's and Women's fashion shows; today it's a must, symbol of chic and class, although more and more diverted by large logos in our streetwear era.
